Sub-continent has a long history of theatre

The history of theatre in this sub-continent goes back a long way while the theatre activists of the region have been experimenting on theatre constantly, said Vice Chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir at a conference. The VC inaugurated the four-day long international conference on Towards Oriental Theatre Studies at the Senate hall of the university while Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka HE Shiro Sadoshima was present as the chief guest. Drama and Dramatics department of the university has organised the conference in collaboration with Grant Programme for Intellectual Exchange Conference 2011-12, a project of the Japan Foundation to celebrate 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relation between Japan and Bangladesh. Bangladeshi plays have achieved fame at international level, said Sadoshima. Ramendu Majumdar, the world-wide president of International Theatre Institute, and Drama and Dramatics department Chairman Prof Md Aminul Islam also spoke at the conference while theatre personality Prof Afsar Ahmad presided over the programme.
