Road crashes kill 6
Six people, including a schoolboy, were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Satkhira, Pabna and Noakhali in last two days.
A correspondent from Gazipur reports: Three people were killed and four injured when a bus ploughed through pedestrians after its driver lost control over the steering at Borobari in Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
Agitated locals torched the bus and vandalised at least 50 vehicles on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, halting traffic for one and a half hours.
Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. The bodies were sent to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, police said.
The injured were rushed to Tongi hospital.
As the news spread, local people reached the spot. They managed to capture the bus and set it ablaze. The bus driver however managed to flee the scene.
Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended till 9:00am following the accident and vandalism, creating an 8-kilometre traffic jam.
Our Satkhira correspondent says: An old man was killed when a motorbike knocked him down while he was crossing the Satkhira-Kaliganj road near Chowbaria intersection in Kaliganj upazila yesterday.
The deceased was Badal Sardar, 70, son of Basarat Ullah, of village Durduria of the upazila.
Our Pabna correspondent adds: A schoolboy was killed on the spot when a speedy bus hit him while he was crossing the Pabna-Santhia road at Nandanpur in Santhia upazila on Saturday evening.
The deceased was Md Ekramul Hossain, 8, son of Ershad Ali, of village Sargram of Santhia upazila in Pabna. He was a student of class two of a local primary school.
Local people caught the bus but its driver managed to flee the scene.
Our Noakhali correspondent says: A woman was killed on the spot when a pickup van crashed her while she was crossing the Maizdee-Sonapur road at Dattabari intersection of Sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Saleha Begum, 45, of the area.
Agitated local people barricaded the road for two hours protesting the accident.
