Unicef chief leaves Dhaka
Unicef Executive Director Dr Anthony Lake left yesterday after a three-day visit to different parts of Bangladesh, a country where he saw worsening conditions of children in urban slums than their rural counterparts.
“Two in five children in Bangladesh are stunted due to malnutrition. The government and donors should put in efforts and resources to anti-stunting measures in order to ensure an equitable society for every child,” he told journalists during his visit to Dhaka.
Dr Anthony, who visited Dhaka in mid seventies, said Bangladesh has made certain economic and social development over decades, but the death of newborns and pregnant mothers yet remained a daunting challenge.
He said half of country's 68 million children live below the poverty line, a fourth of who live under extreme poor conditions.
He, however, appreciated Bangladesh's progress in Millennium Development Goals and personal commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to UN development goals.
