As the students of Jahangirnagar University continued their demonstration demanding punishment to the killers of Zubair Ahmed, two groups of teachers yesterday scuffled at a meeting organised to scrutinise the role of the administration during and after the attack on Zubair. Sources among the teachers told The Daily Star that a group of pro-Awami League teachers loyal to the vice chancellor locked into the scuffle with some pro-BNP teachers over getting floor to address the meeting of the teachers' association in Zahir Raihan auditorium around 11:00am. The scuffle started when a pro-AL professor pushed a pro-BNP teacher the moment he [pro-BNP teacher] stood up from his chair and tried to calm down some teachers who had already engaged into an altercation on the issue of getting floor to address the gathering. Tension intensified as some other teachers of the two groups joined the scuffle. “Such shameful attitude of teachers is never acceptable. I consider it a threat to the dignity of the teachers' community", said a teacher of the environmental science, who left the meeting immediately after the scuffle. As the teachers failed to come to a decision, the Juta (Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association) postponed the emergency general meeting till 10:00am today. The meeting was to scrutinise the university administration's role and find out paths to overcome the ongoing crisis at the institution. Meanwhile, the JU administration has cancelled all programmes to celebrate the "University Day" today paying respect to Zubair, a fourth-year student of English department, who succumbed to his stab injuries Monday following an attack by some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League. The students, however, continued their demonstration for the third consecutive day yesterday. Around 2,000 students brought out a mourning procession wearing black badges and marched the campus streets. They ended up with a rally in front of the university Shaheed Minar. At the rally, the students reiterated their demands including resignation of the proctor and the security officer and publishing of the report of probe committee on Zubair murder within a week.
