14 killed in road crashes
Fourteen people, including a freedom fighter, were killed and 31 others injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Mymensingh, Chittagong, Netrakona and Rangpur yesterday.
UNB from Comilla reports: Six people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus heading towards Comilla from Brahmanbaria hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from behind and tumbled into a roadside ditch at Sinduria Para in Bhurichong at about 11:00am.
The deceased included five auto-rickshaw passengers and the auto driver while the injured are bus passengers.
The dead were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Shah Alam, 32, of Parua village, Ziapur ex-UP member Shah Alam, and college student Zannatul Ferdaous Toma, 18, of Sharifpur village in Bhurichong upazila, Shakil, 19, of Adarsha Sadar upazila, Rubel, 20, and Mujibur Rahman, 35, of Brahmanpara upazila.
Of the injured, five were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital while others to local hospital and clinics.
In another accident, three people, including a microbus driver, were killed at Haripur in Daudkandi upazila at about 9:00am.
Police said the accident occurred when a Chittagong-bound covered van collided head on with a microbus, killing Babu, 20, on the spot and injuring two others.
Two unidentified injured later died on way to a hospital.
Our Mymensingh correspondent says: Mafiz Uddin, 65, a freedom fighter, son of late Miah Hossain of village Amudabad in Nandail, was killed and five others were inured when a nasimon (three-wheeler) fell into a ditch beside the Nandail-Dewanganj road after hitting Mafiz at the village at around 10:00am yesterday.
Police said the accident occurred when Mafiz was walking alongside the road.
The injured were admitted to Nandail Upazila Health Complex.
Police seized the vehicle while its driver managed to flee.
The freedom fighter will be buried at his family graveyard with state honour today in the morning.
Staff correspondent from Chittagong adds: Bus helper Mohammad Ikbal, 25, was killed and two others were injured as the Dhaka-bound bus from Cox's Bazar hit a tree beside Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway at Manasha in Patiya upazila at around 2:50am yesterday.
In another accident, motorcyclist Mohammad Jakaria, 18, son of Mohammad Solaiman of Nanupur in Fatikchhari upazila, was killed on the spot and another injured as a Khagrachhari-bound truck rammed their bike at Baraiyer Hat in the upazila yesterday afternoon.
Injured Nurul Huda was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Our Netrakona correspondent reports: Motorcyclist Aroj Ali, 30, son of Rahamat Ali of village Agia under Purbadhola upazila was killed on the spot and another injured when a truck rammed the bike from behind on Netrakona-Purbadhola road at Chowrasta in Purbadhola upazila yesterday morning.
Injured Abul Khair was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
In Rangpur, motorcyclist Arshadul Haque, 30, of Khoilshakuri village of the sadar upazila, was killed on the spot when a bus rammed his bike on Rangpur-Dhaka highway in the district central bus terminal area yesterday evening.
