Though the government came to power promising to provide massive employment opportunities for the young generation, it is yet to take any effective initiative, said speakers at a discussion yesterday. Hundreds of qualified young people remain unemployed, causing them to suffer from depression, said some left-leaning politicians, indigenous leaders and cultural personalities. The discussion marked the beginning of a two-day Ninth National Conference of Bangladesh Jubo Union, the youth wing of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), at Mahanagar Natyamancha in the city. Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma, popularly known as Santu Larma, said, “Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord 1997 remains unimplemented even after so many years. We know that it will not be implemented without movements and struggle.” The government, like the last one, created a regime of terrorism, corruption and politicisation, depriving farmers, the working class and indigenous people, said Larma, president of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti. CPB President Manjurul Ahsan Khan said “Jamaat-Shibir” joined with over 100 underground organisations to create anarchy to hinder the trial of war criminals. Bangladesh Jubo Union President Kafi Ratan chaired the discussion where noted cultural personality Kamal Lohani also spoke. Jashim Uddin Mandal, a revolutionary in the anti-British movement, inaugurated the conference, calling upon the youth to establish a decimation and repression-free society.
