'Fix potato price'
The government must check the fall in potato prices and fix it as per the production costs, said speakers at a meeting yesterday.
Consumers are purchasing potato at a high price while farmers are not getting enough to cover production costs. Integrated steps must be immediately taken in consultation with the agriculture, food and commerce ministries, potato farmers and cold storage owners, they said.
Nagorik Sanghati, Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods and Karmojibi Nari organised the meeting, “Potato farmer's appeal”, in the city's Jatiya Press Club.
At the meeting, several potato farmers narrated their bitter experience regard the low selling price they are getting for several years, says a press release.
The speakers said subsidy on farm inputs is not enough to develop the agricultural sector and the government must ensure the right prices for the farmers.
Addressing the meeting, Hasanul Huq Inu, chairman of all party parliamentary committee on agriculture, said the government must see to the difficulties faced by the farmers after they bring home their produce each year.
