President Zillur Rahman yesterday urged the country's specialised universities to support the government in identifying areas needed to build a “digital Bangladesh”. “Science and technology based universities can help the government realise its goal of building an IT-based prosperous Bangladesh,” he said. The president was presiding over the 5th convocation of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city. Access to higher education was made easier with the increasing number of private universities, 50 at present, many of which are being operated successfully, he said. Describing universities as non-profit social organisations, Zillur said making profits can not be a university's key goal. The private university act was enacted to improve the standard and environment of higher education. Basic changes must be brought in the university curriculum to ensuring time-befitting education and help students face global challenges, he said. “There is no alternative to acquiring modern education on science and technology to face the challenges of the 21st century. “We would like to build a new generation competent in science and technology, imbued with ethical values and patriotism and responsible to people,” said the president. The convocation conferred bachelor and master degrees to 1,837 students while three students received Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Award for their outstanding academic achievements. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid attended as the special guest while Prof Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam was the convocation speaker. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AMM Safiullah and the board of trustees Chairman Qazi Rafiqul Alam also spoke on the occasion.
