RMCH interns go on strike for security

Intern doctors of Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) went on work abstention yesterday morning demanding their safety and security. The strike was enforced following an assault on Dr Mahmudur Hasan Firoz and two other nurses of the hospital by a number of people at the hospital on Thursday night. They also demanded arrest and punishment to the culprits and setting up a permanent police camp inside the hospital. Mahbubar Rahman, 65, a patient from Satgara Misrtipata, was admitted to RMCH at about 2:30am on Thursday with old age complications. He was undergoing treatment of Dr Firoz and died after one hour, they said. Following the death, some outsiders led by Manik and Lalin, assaulted Firoz and senior nurse Bina Rani and student nurse Opurbo Rani Roy on allegation of not providing proper treatment, said Dr Sanjoy Kumar Roy, general secretary of Intern Doctors' Association of RMCH. A case was filed accusing four people, including Manik and Lalin, with Kotwali Police Station. Meanwhile, patients of the hospital were suffering a lot due to the strike, hospital sources said.
