There is no separate law to prevent violence on the campus, said Dr Nasim Hasan, proctor of Chittagong University (CU). “We take action according to the CU ordinance for small clashes but, in case of bigger clashes, necessary action is taken as per law of the land,” he said. Lack of understanding among different student organisations is the reason behind campus violence, he added. Chandan Kumar Poddar, a former assistant proctor who served during the tenure 2009-11, said, in the recent incident of student clash on the campus, the proctors' body and the university authority were not alert to avoid the untoward situation. He said those guilty in such incidents are often not brought to book due to political influence. Prof Dr Mozaffar Ahmed, president of Chittagong University Teachers' Association (Cuta), held the lack of ideology in politics accountable for the recurrence of campus clashes. As the businessmen are now dominating politics, they create a vacuum of ideology in politics and the student organisations on the campus get influenced by it, he said. Furthermore, as the university authorities are dominated by pro-government persons, they seem to be reluctant about punishing the guilty if they are from the ruling party backed student bodies, he added. Mamunul Haque, president of BCL CU unit, said Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) started the politics of violence on the CU campus in 1986 cutting the wrist of Abdul Hamid, then a leader of Jatiya Chhatra Samaj. Now, they are out to foil the trial of war criminals and hence tried to create unrest on the campus thorugh violence, he added. Badiul Alam, president of ICS CU unit, said the tendency to occupy halls and establish supremacy on the campus is the main reason behind violence among the student bodies. He also said, if those guilty in previous killings were brought to book, the recurrence of killings on the campus would not occur. AHM Selim Ullah, proctor-in-charge of CU, said those guilty in incidents of violence are punished according to recommendations of the probe committees. “Unfortunately, none of the killers could be brought to book as they could not be identified,” he said.
