A businessman was shot dead by "unknown miscreants" at his house in the suburban Doloipara area of Shahporan Police Station early hours of yesterday. The deceased, Monzurul Islam alias Monzil, 35, used to run a grocery store in the city's Kalighat area. Around 3:00 or 4:00am, some 15 armed people entered the house by breaking open the door and took away 8-10 tolas of gold ornaments, said Parul Begum, sister of the victim. As Monzil attempted to resist the robbers, they stabbed and shot him, she added. Monzil's younger brother Mohsin also was also stabbed. He was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner, Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), said the incident seems to be a case of robbery. Firoz Ali, the victim's brother-in-law, claimed that it was not robbery, but a planned murder. There had been disputes among the victim's brothers and sisters over property, he added.
