9 killed in road accidents

Nine people were killed and 15 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Chittagong, Jessore, Rangpur, Dinajpur and Chandpur early Sunday and yesterday. Staff Correspondent reports: Two motorcyclists were killed when a bus rammed their bike on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Teguria of Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital, yesterday afternoon. The dead were identified as Mohammad Sharif, 42, and Nibir, 30. Of the two, Sharif died on the spot while Nibir at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. In Chittagong, a pick-up van driver and his assistant died instantly when their vehicle hit a truck parked beside Chittagong-Kaptai road at Pahartali Bazar in Raozan upazila yesterday morning. The deceased are Sadek, 22, the driver, and Farid, 19, his helper. Our Benapole correspondent says: Motorcyclist Masudur Rahman, 20, son of Ayub Ali, was critically injured as his bike hit the railings of a bridge at Chhoto Achra in Sharsha upazila of Jessore yesterday. He succumbed to his injuries at Jessore Medical College Hospital. In another accident, Shasthi Mondal, 60, wife of Ratan Mandol of Sripur village in Monirampur upazila, died after being hit by a motorbike at Pashapol village in Chougachha upazila yesterday. A Rangpur correspondent adds: A pick-up van collided with a motorbike at Chaitantala in Pirgachha upazila on Sunday noon, killing the motorcyclist Saiful Islam, 30, son of Abdur Razzak, on the spot and injuring another. Injured Shafiqul Islam, 32, was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Following the accident, locals put up barricades on Rangpur-Pirgachha-Sunderganj road. In Dinajpur, Shakmal Hossain, 45, of Birampur upazila, was killed on the spot and at least 15 others were injured as a Dhaka-bound passenger bus crashed into a roadside shop at Shingra in Ghoraghat upazila yesterday. Four of the injured were rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital while the others to Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex. In Chandpur, a truck ran over Mohammad Sharif Gazi, 35, son of Mohammad Shahjahan Gazi, at Bagadi intersection on the outskirts of the town yesterday, killing him instantly.
