SCBA polls Mar 21, 22

The two-day annual election of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for its 14 executive posts including president and secretary will be held on March 21 and 22. A total of 3,829 lawyers of the Supreme Court have registered as voters in the country's major bar association polls. The executive committee of the association will fix the schedule for its polls on March 1, SCBA Secretary Bodruddoza Badal told The Daily Star yesterday. According to sources, the main contest would take place between the panel of ruling Awami League-backed Bangladesh Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (BSASP) and BNP-backed Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (BJAF). Both the forums would finalise their panels within the next few days, sources said. The lawyers considered as BSASP's probable candidates for the position of president are Rokanuddin Mahmud, Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury, Abdul Baset Majumder, Anisul Huq and Abdul Matin Khasru. Likewise, BSASP lawyers Momtaj Uddin Ahmed Mehedi, Rabiul Alam Budu, Azaharullah Bhuiyan and Sheikh Awasafur Rahman Bulu are aspiring contestants for the post of SCBA's secretary. Meanwhile, possible BJAF candidates running for president are Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, the incumbent president of SCBA and Zainul Abedin. Incumbent Secretary Bodruddoza Badal, Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Helal Uddin Mollah, Munir Sharif, Akbar Amin Babul, Golam Md Chowdhury Alal, Fahima Nasrin Munni and a few others will contest from BJAF for the post of secretary, according to sources.
