AUW reviewes academic activities, funding

The Bangladesh Board of Advisors of Asian University for Women (AUW) held a meeting on the campus in Chittagong on Friday to review developments in AUW's governance, academic and extracurricular activities and funding. Foreign Minister Dipu Moni chaired the meeting while former advisers to caretaker governments Sultana Kamal and Rokia Afzal Rahman, the prime minister's Adviser on International Affairs Gowher Rizvi, Chittagong Development Authority Chairman Abdus Salam, former principal secretary to the prime minister Abdul Karim, Prof Hamida Banu and Manwara Ali, president of Chittagong Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were present. AUW acting vice-chancellor Kamal Ahmad, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Dean Prof Kathleen Hewett-Smith, Physical Sciences and Engineering Dean Dr Ashok Keshari and Dean of Students Fatema Haque were also present, says a press release. Dipu Moni said, “Only when you actually visit the university and meet with the students can you appreciate the enormity of what has been achieved and the boundless potentials.” The advisers met with the students, who are from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and noted the uniqueness of the learning environment and opportunities. Afterwards Sultana Kamal presented Zahida Ishrat Khan, a third-year student, with the Begum Sufia Kamal Fellowship 2012-13 for her academic achievements. Sultana Kamal also donated a collection of books and papers on her mother, Begum Sufia Kamal, to the AUW library.
