Reproductive, sexual health of adolescent girls stressed
Speakers at a roundtable yesterday underscored the need for creating awareness among adolescent girls and women through the government and non-government organisations' (NGO) initiatives on reproductive and sexual health and adverse effects of premature marriage.
They were addressing the roundtable on role and support of lawmakers to improve adolescent girls' and women's access to public health services in Swandip and Patiya organised by Public Policy Forum supported by USAID, Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha (BNPS) and The Asia Foundation at a city hotel.
Public Policy Forum district Coordinator Jesmin Sultana Paru presented the keynote paper while Asia Foundation President David Arnold spoke as chief guest.
Arnold said local lawmakers could play a vital role in changing present health condition of adolescent girls and women.
Most of the adolescent girls and women of Swandip and Patiya in Chittagong are deprived from the knowledge of reproductive and sexual health, according to the keynote paper.
As there are not enough health complexes, doctors, nurses, skilled manpower and medical equipment, the girls and women of the areas are deprived of the health care, the keynote paper adds.
