JS body suggests budgetary fund

A parliamentary watchdog yesterday recommended introduction of allowance for the women-led poor families in the national budget for fiscal 2012-13. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Women and Children Affairs Ministry at its 30th meeting also suggested keeping necessary allocations in the budget for identifying the problems faced by women and children and raising their awareness to resolve those. The meeting was held at the Sangsad Bhaban with committee chairman Meher Afroz in the chair. Renowned economists Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya and Prof Mustafizur Rahman, Dhaka University Law Department professor Dr Shahnaz Huda and improving democracy through parliamentary development project chief technical adviser attended the meeting at the special invitation of the committee. The meeting discussed the budget preparation of the ministry for fiscal 2012-13 and its analysis and evaluation. Dr Debapriya and Prof Mustafiz discussed the overall budget process and its analysis while Prof Shahnaz focused on priority areas. The meeting emphasised sector-wise evaluation by the parliamentary watchdog before placing the budget in the House. It also suggested submitting reports on implementation of the budget before the committee at least thrice a year. Committee members State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowhury, M Sirajul Akbar, Zinatun Nesa Talukder, Prof Dr MA Mannan, Rebecca Momin and Asma Zerin Jumu were present at the meeting.
