Left-leaning student bodies burn effigies of Hillary, Pranab
Several left-leaning student organisations brought out a procession and rally and burnt the effigies of US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at Dhaka University yesterday protesting their arrival.
Four student organisations, including Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri, under the banner of Progressive Students' Alliance, organised the programme.
Speakers at the rally at the base of Aparajeya Bangla said Hillary came to discuss hidden security strategies and trade treaties, which are harmful for Bangladesh, to realise US interests.
They condemned the Bangladesh government for greeting the secretary of state.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union President Ferdous Ahmed Ujjal, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front General Secretary Mehdi Hasan Tomal, Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri President Bappaditya Basu and Bangladesh Chhatra Federation General Secretary Mahbub Iran addressed the programme.
Afterwards, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Union burnt the effigies near Aparajeya Bangla.
In the afternoon, police snatched another effigy of Hillary which activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri were preparing to burn, leading to an altercation.
On information, DU Proctor Prof MA Ali rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. No one was arrested.
