Freight vehicle workers' strike May 13

Our Correspondent, Ctg
Workers of freight vehicles here yesterday called a 24-hour transport strike for May 13 over a seven-point demand, which the government promised to implement two years ago. The demands include stopping harassment of the workers by police, construction of a terminal in the city for freight vehicles, withdrawal of cases against the workers, issuing of appointment letters, creating a welfare fund, and stopping highway robbery. Leaders of "Pannobahi Sarak Paribahan Sramik Oikkyo Parishad", association of freight vehicle workers, announced the strike at a news conference at Chittagong Press Club. Convener of the association, Rabiul Mowla, read out a written speech at the conference. Mowla said the government agreed to fulfil the seven demands of the transport workers two years ago, but now it seemed the government was quite reluctant to deliver its promise. On the other hand, traffic and highway police are extorting and harassing the transport workers at different points in the name of checking licence, he said, adding that highway robbery was also on the rise due to police's failure to resist robbers.
