Speakers suggest at pre-budget discussion

Speakers at a pre-budget discussion yesterday suggested undertaking priority based development projects in the northern and southern parts of the country to reduce regional discrimination. The discussion organised by the Society for Social Studies was held at Theatre Institute in the port city. The programme was chaired by Kazi Mahmudul Imam, president of the society while Sayeed Ahmed, chief executive of Institute of Informatics and Development, presented the keynote paper. Ahmed suggested increasing the tax free income level, keeping minimum income tax level unchanged, increasing income tax level 10 percent more for whitening black money and determining the price of power according to income level. Prof Dr Moinul Islam of Economics Department at Chittagong University, also former president of Bangladesh Economic Association, was present as special guest at the event. Citing the present worst situation of the capital market, he criticised the Bangladesh Bank for not taking early steps against the banks when they were investing in the capital market beyond their limits. F Kabir Chowdhury Manik and Jannatul Ferdous, councilors of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Mahfuzul Hoque Shah, director of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industries (CCCI), Mahbub Chowdhury, vice president of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries and different professionals also spoke.
