North South University and Bangladesh Elementary School retained their championship titles this year in their respective groups at “The Daily Star-BSRM English Debate Competition 2012”. Islamic University of Technology and East West University were adjudged the runner-up and 2nd runner up respectively from the university group while Cider International School became the runner-up from the school level. Azam Koreshi Sanin of East West University and Irfan Uddin from Bangladesh Elementary School won the titles of the best speakers. The final round of debates and awarding ceremony were held on Saturday in a restaurant in Chittagong city where Chittagong University economics department Prof Dr Moinul Islam was present as the chief guest. Presenting the awards, Prof Moinul said, “Such debate competitions will help you (the students) learn many things and make you more brilliant and positive through which you can approach the world with much more confidence.” Dristy Chittagong organised the seven-day competition, in general and parliamentary form, participated by 10 schools and twelve universities of Dhaka and Chittagong. Prothom Alo Resident Editor Abul Momen, The Daily Star Chittagong Bureau Chief Raisul Huq Bahar, Dristy Debate Club Chairman Safia Gazi Rahman and Director Masud Bakul, Chittagong School of British Law Director Prashanta Bhushon Barua and Drishti Chittagong President Kasshaful Haque Shehzad and General Secretary Adnan Mannan were present on the occasion.
