Vested Property
Refrain from publishing misleading reports
Civil, rights leaders urge media
Leaders of several civil and rights organisations yesterday urged media to refrain from publishing any report that can hinder the ongoing process intended to return vested property to its original owners.
In a statement, they pointed out that a few media reports have said that a delegation, who left behind their property in the then East Pakistan, from India is coming to Bangladesh to try to get back their property under the vested property act. These reports were made quoting the Kolkata-based daily Ananda Bazar Patrika.
According to the Vested Property Return Act-2001 or the Vested Property (Amended) Return Act-2011, people who had left the county during the period September 6, 1965 to February 16, 1969 and have taken Indian citizenship are not eligible to get back vested property.
The leaders said only the citizens of Bangladesh who are owners of or heirs to the vested property can demand the property.
The statement was signed by Advocate Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of Bangladesh Hindu-Buddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, Advocate Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra, Kamal Lohani and Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, president and general secretary of Movement for Resistance of the Vested Property Act, Khusi Kabir, coordinator of Nijera Kori, Prof Abul Barakat, honorary advisor of HDRC, Shamsul Huda, executive director of ALRD, Advocate Tabarak Hossain, general secretary of Sammilita Samajik Andolon, and Sara Hossain, honorary director of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Service Trust.
