A corruption-free society is the prime prerequisite to foster the country's hidden talents like Nishat Majumder and Wasfia Nazreen, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said yesterday. "In our country, there are many hidden talents which can bloom if we curb corruption. Let's establish a corruption-free society," he said. The minister said everyone should be provided with equal opportunity to nurture their talents. "We have to be aware that no talent is destroyed due to political or regional factor." Syed Ashraf was speaking at a reception accorded to Nishat Majumder, the first Bangladeshi women to conquer Mount Everest on May 19. Wasfia Nazreen achieved the feat as the second Bangladeshi woman on May 26. Taqsem A Khan, managing director of Dhaka Wasa, which hosted the reception, announced Nishat's promotion from accounts officer to senior accounts officer at Dhaka Wasa. Earlier, Dhaka Wasa gave Nishat an award of Tk 5 lakh and allotted a residence in government staff quarters. Communications and Railways Minister Obaidul Quader and Feni Samity in Dhaka separately accorded receptions to Nishat and Wasfia yesterday.
