11 witnesses face arrests in 2 cases

A Sylhet court on Wednesday issued arrest orders against 11 prosecution witnesses in two separate cases for their repeated failures to appear and give deposition. The witnesses facing arrests include a police officer and two local photojournalists. Additional District & Sessions Judge-III, Sylhet, Manzurul Haque Khan, also judge of a special tribunal, fixed afresh August 6 to hear the depositions of the witnesses in both the cases and asked police to produce them on that day. Six of the witnesses are supposed to testify in a 2005 explosive recovery case against Nurjahan, wife of former JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman (executed 2007), and four others. The witnesses include then assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Mosih Uddin, photojournalists Iqbal Mansur and Sheikh Ashraful Alam Nasir, Alam Mia, Bacchu Mia and Abdul Momit. The remaining five are to give statements against six people, including Huji operatives, who were accused of preparing bombs to launch an attack on Sheikh Hasina's last election rally in Sylhet city in 2001. The witnesses are Md Shahjahan, Abdus Shahid, Ramananda Singh, Sepul Begum, and Habib Ahmad.
