DU student killed by husband in Satkhira

A Dhaka University student was strangled by her husband, also a DU student, early yesterday at Khanpur village in Satkhira Sadar upazila. The deceased was Masuda Sultana, a first-year student of law. The husband Abdul Kuddus, a first-year student of political science, surrendered at Satkhira Sadar Police Station in the morning. Family members said Masuda and Kuddus got married on June 11 last year. Later, they enrolled for the law department of Kustia Islami University and they lived in a rented house nearby. Later that year, they got admitted to DU. Since then Masuda had stayed in Rokeya Hall and Kuddus in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. Police and family members said an altercation took place between the two on Friday night. Masuda's family sought arbitration in her house in Satkhira and asked the couple to stay in separation until they got established. However, Kuddus, hailing from Paikgachha upazila in Khulna, did not agree to the decision. Around midnight, he convinced Masuda to come to his room and tied her throat with a scarf following further altercation and choked her to death. “The couple was having some misunderstanding for several months and Masuda was unwilling to continue the relationship,” said Sharif Khalid, a cousin of the victim. DU Proctor Prof Dr MA Ali told The Daily Star that he had talked to the family members of both. Contacted, Md Aslam Khan, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, told The Daily Star on the phone that the body had been sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Masuda's uncle Abdullah Hel Galib filed a case accusing Kuddus, the OC confirmed. “Kuddus was sent to jail following a confessional statement in the court,” he added.
