Power Cut, House Rent Hike
Govt gets JSD chief flak in JS
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal chief Mayeenuddin Khan Badal yesterday sternly criticised the government in parliament, saying “power has made the ruling alliance very arrogant”.
He warned this arrogance might cause the government to fall.
Speaking at the budget session, Badal lambasted the government for its failure in various sectors. He said the government had failed to repair the battered Dhaka-Chittagong highway, rein in spiraling house rents in the capital and free footpaths from illegal occupation.
“It seems suddenly we have become very arrogant. But we should know that this can cause our fall,” said Badal, executive president of JSD, a component of the Awami League-led grand alliance government.
He alleged that the police were engaged in money making and government officials were randomly involved in politics. “But we cannot comment about these issues,” he pointed out.
Badal blamed the government for failing to control spiraling house rents in the capital.
“Why didn't you [government] set up house rent control authority in different parts of the city?” he asked. “What type of country is this that we cannot free footpaths for pedestrians? Why is the government not disbanding the police force for failing to save the footpaths from grabbers?”
Badal was especially critical of the battered Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
“It takes nine to ten hours to travel to the port city from the capital. It cannot be tolerated that the government cannot repair a road in three and a half years. We don't want to hear any more excuses from ministers or others,” he said.
Criticising the proposed budget, he said the finance minister had not set activities on a priority basis in the budget.
