New Siddhirganj Power Plant

Taskforce to ensure gas supply formed

Unb, Dhaka
The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources yesterday formed a taskforce to bring the schedule of completion of gas pipeline works ahead by six months to facilitate gas supply to the 412 MW combined cycle power plant at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj. The plant is scheduled to come into operation in February 2013, but the works of an under construction pipeline is scheduled to be completed in July next year. This means the power plant will have to wait for six months to get the gas supply. In order to overcome this bottleneck, the ministry has formed the taskforce headed by its additional secretary Abu Taher to negotiate with the pipeline contractor. A Turkish contractor was assigned the construction of the gas pipeline. After a high level meeting at the ministry, Prime Minister's Advisor Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury told reporters that the government is trying to produce 1300 additiona power by gas-fired power plants.
