The locomotive of a local train derailed with three cars at Parbatipur railway station yesterday, leaving the driver and at least 10 passengers injured. Rail communication on all routes from the railway junction had been snapped for about two hours and a half since the derailment at about 1:45pm. The locomotive skidded off the tracks, dragged about 20-30 metres, and almost flipped to the ground. The train operator Md Abdul Hamid was injured critically. He was taken to Parbatipur Railway Hospital. At least 10 passengers got hurt when they rushed to get off the train. Three of the 11 cars of the train also ran off the rail tracks. Sources said the derailment occurred due to poor slippers and a lack of stones on the tracks. Krishna Chandra Basak, in-charge of Parbatipur relief train operation, said the derailed cars were restored to the tracks, and the locomotive would be rescued at night.
