'Protect Dalits from discrimination'
Dalit community members yesterday demanded formulation of a law to protect them from caste-based workplace and social discrimination.
“We face discrimination simply because of our caste and profession,” said Bangladesh Dalit and Excluded Rights Movement (BDERM) General Secretary Bodhanaki Shalomon
The community's members were addressing a human chain jointly organised by BDERM and Bangladesh Dalit and Excluded Women Federation in front of the capital's Jatiya Press Club.
The federation Chairperson Moni Rani Das said National Human Rights Commission must form a specialised cell to protect the Dalits and engage in a nationwide investigation to uproot discriminatory practices.
The women and children affairs ministry must also form a cell to prevent oppression on Dalit women, she added.
“There are 55 lakh Dalits and overlooked minorities in the country. It is lamentable that Dalit children are expelled from schools because of their religion in a nation that was created promising equal rights for all,” said Moni.
