Sylhet Jail
Earth filling for construction suspended
Land filling in the construction site of Sylhet Central Jail in suburban Badaghat area of Sadar upazila remained suspended yesterday.
The contractor-Mohammad Yunus & Brothers-started the earth filling in the site on Friday.
But locals made two attacks on their workers in the evening and at midnight, leaving two of the workers injured, and asked them to stop the work.
On information, police went to the site and brought the situation under control.
Managing Director of Mohammad Yunus & Brothers Shamsur Rahman Chowdhury said some locals led by district Awami League Joint Secretary Sujat Ali Rafique demanded Tk 25 lakh to them even before starting the land filling.
They declined to give that and the attacks were a consequence, he added.
Sujat said the allegation of demanding extortion money was baseless.
They just asked the contractor's men not to lift earth from a disputed land, he claimed.
Officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station Gousul Hossain told this correspondent yesterday evening that they were trying to amicably resolve the issue between the two groups since it was a major development project.
A negotiation meeting will be held on July 7 at Moiarchar High School, he said.
The PWD had awarded the Tk 8 crore job for land filling to the firm.
