A mobile court yesterday sealed off two illegal diagnostic centres in Mohammadpur in the capital and jailed a woman posing as an MBBS doctor and eight technician imposters. The moveable properties of the centres were confiscated and will be auctioned, said Executive Magistrate HM Anwar Pasha who conducted the raid from 11:00am with the aid of Rapid Action Battalion-2 personnel. The nine were sent to Dhaka Central Jail, he said. The centres, New Medi-Lab and Consultation Centre and CPL Diagnostic Centre, on Humayun Road in Mohammadpur had no legal papers or documents. The woman, Shahana Zaman Shanu, 33, jailed for two years, was posing as a gynaecology specialist whereas she was actually a practitioner of unani, said Anwar Pasha. Shahana was a co-owner of New Medi-Lab and Consultation Centre. Four of her technician imposters, Md Rubel Hossain, 22, Taslima Begum, 30, Jaheda Begum, 45, and Ujjal Kumar Bishwas, 25, were each jailed for six months. “On August 26, 2008, Shanu was fined Tk 50,000 for running the centre, then named Medi-Lab and Consultation Centre. “After a three-year gap, she resumed the illegal business several months ago, adding the word 'New' to the centre's name,” said the magistrate. The remaining four convicts, Inamul Haque, 22, Shahinur Rahman, 30, Mainul Haque, 29, and Rahenul Islam Faruk, 25, were also posing as technicians at CPL Diagonstic Centre, he said. They were each jailed for six months as none had any required certificate to practice as technicians, added the magistrate. “The diagnostic centres did not have any doctor. The technician imposters themselves were signing the test reports using the names of different MBBS doctors. “They had no proper machineries and equipment and the environments inside the centres were very much unhygienic,” he said.
