12 killed, 16 hurt in road accidents

Twelve people were killed and 16 others injured in separate road accidents in Narayanganj, Narsingdi and Pabna yesterday. Our Narayanganj correspondent reports, five people including the driver of a CNG-run three-wheeler were killed when a speeding truck rammed the vehicle from behind on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Kamtal area of Bandar upazila around 10:30am yesterday. Kamtal police said five passengers of the three-wheeler died on the spot as the truck knocked down it from behind. Two of the deceased were identified as Resell and Hanifa of Bandar upazila in the district. In Narsingdi, five people were killed and 13 others injured when a truck hit a pick-up van on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the sadar upazila around 6:30am. Abdul Halim, 40, Delowar Hossain, 40, and an unidentified man, aged around 35, died on the spot, police said. Apple, 28, and another unidentified person succumbed to their injuries on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the police added. The accident occurred around 6:30am when a truck hit an oncoming Saheprotab-bound pick-up van in Dagaria area of the upazila, said KM Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station. Protesting the accident, agitating people blocked the highway for nearly two hours from 6:45am, creating a huge tailback. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control around 8:30am. The injured were admitted to Narsingdi 100-bed District Hospital. In Pabna, two people were killed and three others were injured as a truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Pabna-Ishwardi highway at Manikour square at about 6:00pm yesterday. The dead were identified as Abdur Rahim, 45, and Hassem Ali, 40. Both of them were the passengers of the auto-rickshaw. Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station Md Akbor Hossain said a speeding truck rammed the auto-rickshaw carrying passengers in Manikour point of the road as the driver of the truck lost his control over the steering. Rahim and Hassem died instantly while three other CNG passengers were admitted to Ishwardi hospital.
