The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the death sentence of Md Saleh Nur from Chittagong for killing his wife and two-month old daughter in 2002. A six-member full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain passed the order after dismissing an appeal filed by Saleh against a High Court verdict that confirmed his death penalty handed down by a Chittagong court. After the apex court passed the order, Deputy Attorney General Md Shohrowardi told The Daily Star that the convict (Saleh) can file a review petition with the SC against its dismissal order within 30 days after getting the copy of the order. According to the case statement, Saleh, son of Hazi Moulavi Sayedur Rahman of Chandraghona Fakirpara of Rangunia upazila in Chittagong, strangled his wife Nur Ayesha Begum and daughter Amatun Nur on March 5, 2002 over family feud. Md Selim, a relative of Ayesha, filed a case against Saleh with Rangunia Police Station on March 6, 2002. Saleh, who was on the run after killing his wife and daughter, surrendered to police on March 20, 2002. He made a confessional statement to the magistrate on March 21, 2002, saying that he killed his wife and daughter as he was mentally disturbed due to family feud. Additional Sessions Judge of Chittagong Nur Mohammad Jahangir Sarker convicted Saleh and sentenced him to death on June 21, 2005. The HC confirmed his death sentence on October 2, 2009.
