Students go berserk over fellow's death

Protesting the death of a fellow college mate, students of Cambrian School and College yesterday took to the streets near Basundhara Residential Area in the capital, vandalising around 10 vehicles and injuring at least three persons. Among the injured, Maisha Akhter, a student of Viqarunessa Noon School and College, was admitted to a private hospital with head injuries while two unidentified passers-by were given primary aid at a local clinic. Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhatara Police Station, said Ashish, a college student of Cambrian School and College, sustained injuries in a road accident near the Embassy check post area on July 1 and succumbed to his injuries at Apollo Hospitals Monday evening. Hearing the news of his death, fellow students took to the streets around 11:00am yesterday, he said. Witnesses said, students got down from a bus of the college near the main gate of Basundhara Residential Area and vandalised around 10 vehicles on the road to Norda. Police said the students were heading for Ashish's house in Moghbazar to attend his Namaz-e-Janaza, but on the way they started the vandalism. Police brought the situation under control after around half an hour.
