The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) yesterday signed a contract to jointly launch a programme for strengthening local governance. Ambassador William Hanna, head of the Delegation of the EU to Bangladesh, and Stefan Priesner, the UNDP country director, signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations at the EU Dhaka office, said a press release. The five-year programme will focus on broader development roles of councillors, fostering bottom-up approach, participatory development and poverty alleviation. It will also support fiscal decentralisation, promote transparent public expenditure and contribute to local governance policy reform.
