No dialogue held to end Buet crisis

The Buet stalemate continued as the vice chancellor did not launch talks with the protesting teachers and students yesterday despite the prime minister's call for dialogue. The teachers, meanwhile, ruled out any discussion with the VC saying that they wanted the resignation of the VC and Pro-VC in the first place. The vice chancellor, however, once again said he would not resign on "unethical demand" and would send a proposal to the teachers for talks today or tomorrow. With the protesters and the authorities sticking firm to their stands, it seems that the standoff at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology will not end any soon, while the indefinite sit-in led by the Buet Teachers' Association entered the third day yesterday. The students hung a banner reading sarcastic comments like "VC, leave the chair if you have a minimum level of shame" and "VC and Pro-VC get out of my campus." They also started a mass signature campaign. After holding an internal meeting last night, the teachers' association said if anyone from the government offered talks, it would consider the option. "But there is no door for talks with the VC," said Prof Ashraful Islam, general secretary of the association. He said the association would bring out a silent procession on the campus at 11:00am today. Talking to The Daily Star, Buet VC Prof Nazrul Islam said he was hopeful that a solution would come out today or tomorrow.
