Dhanmondi Playground
Stop construction works
Environmentalists urge govt
Environmentalists yesterday demanded immediate steps to stop all sorts of construction works in capital's Dhanmondi playground and eviction of all illegal establishments from it.
They also urged the government to ensure proper maintenance of all parks and playgrounds in the country.
They were speaking at a citizen rally organised by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa), a common forum of citizens and organizations concerned with the environment of Bangladesh, in front of the Fine Arts Faculty of Dhaka University to press home their nine-point demands.
The other demands include formation of citizen committees consisting of local people to oversee the country's playgrounds and parks, and ensuring number of parks and playgrounds in proportion to the population of an area
With Bapa Joint Secretary Salma A Shafi in the chair, its other Joint Secretaries Sharif Jamil, Shahjahan Mirdah, Mihir Biswas, Tushar Rehman, secretary general of Citizen Rights Movement, Humayun Kabir Sumon, co-coordinator of Green Voice, among other, also spoke at the programme.
Sharif Jamil said the High Court (HC) directed authorities concerned to demarcate areas of all the parks and playgrounds in the capital, and demolish illegal structures from those places on March 15 last year.
As per the court order, no structure could be built inside boundaries of the parks and playgrounds in the capital, he said adding that the HC also ordered to keep open the playground for all.
But authorities of Dhanmondi Club, now Sheikh Jamal Dhanmoni Club, is constructing a huge gate and barbed wire fence on its boundary wall, which would restrict common people to enter the playground.
“It is the violation of the court order,” he added.
