Police high-ups told field-level police personnel across the country not to get involved in any kind of extortion ahead of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. The warning came from a meeting held at the Police Headquarters on Wednesday on security and traffic management ahead of the holy month, according to sources at the Police Headquarters. The meeting also decided that police will not allow any kind of business occupying footpath by setting up makeshift shops, the sources said. The meeting also gave directives to police to prevent robbery and extortion on highways, and any kind of criminal activity in the country's markets and shopping malls. Moreover, directives were also given to keep traffic smooth on city roads and highways. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker chaired the meeting, where police commissioners from all metropolitans, deputy inspector generals (DIGs) from all police ranges and top officials of Special Branch (SB), Detective Branch (DB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Highway Police, Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and Industrial Police were present. IGP Hassan Mahmood Khandker told The Daily Star that they will not tolerate extortion from and by anybody on the occasion of the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. "We have a zero tolerance policy towards extortion. We are against extortion in any form, and by and from anybody," he said. About makeshift eatery shops on footpaths during the month of Ramadan, he said they have instructed police to prevent setting up of the shops. "We will first encourage the businessmen not to set up the shops. Legal action will be taken, if anybody sets up shop on footpaths," the IGP said. Special security measures will be taken at different bus stands, lunch terminals, and railway stations to prevent selling of tickets in black market, said sources at the meeting. Mobile courts will be conducted against adulteration in commodities. The courts will also take action against traffic rule violators during the Ramadan, the sources said. Meanwhile, speaking at a freshers' reception programme at Rajarbagh Police Lines School and College in the capital, IGP Hassan Mahmood Khandker said their special security measures will be effective from July 17.
