Robbers kill fisherman

A fisherman was killed and four others were injured when a gang of robbers opened fire on a fishing trawler in the Bay of Bengal on Friday. The robbers also looted valuables worth around Tk 8 lakh including fishes worth Tk 3 lakh, fishing net worth Tk 3 lakh, 18 mobile phone sets and other machineries from the trawler. The deceased was Jakir Hossain, 30, and the injured were Mohammad Nirob, 28, Mohammad Noman, 30, Abdul Malek, 42 and Abul Kalam, 32. Quoting the victims, Utpal Barua, second officer at Kotowali Police Station in Chittagong, said the fishing trawler named “Iftesham Hasan-1” came under attack by the robbers when it was fishing about 10-nautical miles away from Laboni point of Cox's Bazar. “The robbers looted fishes, a net, mobile phone sets and other machineries leaving the boat dysfunctional,” he said adding that a passing boat towed the trawler back to the Cox's Bazar Fisherighat area on Saturday morning. Police recovered the body early yesterday and sent it to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The injured were first admitted to Cox's Bazar Medical College Hospital. Later, two of them were shifted to the CMCH.
