Protect forests, plant trees to mitigate climate change

Scientists estimate that existing fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal) will be in short supply by 2050 and will totally end by this century's end, unless large scale discoveries are made. Nuclear and hydro-powered electricity generation is less popular because of environmental reasons. Wind, tidal and solar power generation are the best alternatives. Of the three, solar is the best choice. For Bangladesh, with scarce resources, solar power generation is the best option for the future. Many big and small companies have already started this business and solar power usage is rapidly spreading all over the country, especially in remote areas. The government is to be commended for the initiative but more large scale efforts are required if industries are to benefit from this. We can not ignore the importance of preserving our existing forests and planting more to maintain 25% minimum forest area for a healthy environment. We must realise that without forests and trees, climate will change, pure water supply will be adversely affected, crop production will decline and millions of species of flora and fauna that nourish our planet will become extinct, as will the human race. A person must face severe punishment if he cuts down a tree without planting five saplings. Those who are responsible for protecting the forests but fail to do so should also be given exemplary punishment.
