RU Student's Killing

Teachers go on strike demanding probe

RU Correspondent
Rajshahi University teachers under the banner “Nationalist Teachers' Forum” yesterday went on a one-hour strike demanding judicial investigation into the murder of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist Abdullah Al Hasan Sohel. Sohel, joint convener of BCL Sher-e-Bangla Hall unit, died nearly 12 hours after being shot during a gunfight between two BCL factions at RU early Monday. Wearing black badges, over 100 teachers of the forum abstained from work to press home their demand. Addressing a rally organised by the forum, speakers alleged that under supervision of the present administration, the ruling party backed BCL is engaging in illicit activities in the university like extortion and internal clashes. Fazlul Haque, general secretary of the forum, said their next course of action would be decided in a meeting scheduled to be held today. On Monday, the clash broke out following an altercation between the BCL RU unit organising secretary and its vice president. There has been a rumour on campus that the two factions clashed over collecting money for Padma bridge but it has not been verified.
