Student Murder
100 RU teachers want VC's removal
Over 100 Rajshahi University teachers under the banner “Nationalist Teachers' Forum” formed a human chain in front of the university's senate bhaban yesterday demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan.
At the programme, starting around 10:30am, they said the VC-led administration failed to ensure security on the campus, leading to the death of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist Abdullah Al Hasan Sohel.
Sohel, joint convener of BCL Sher-e-Bangla Hall unit and studying in his second year in the sociology department, died nearly 12 hours after being shot during a gunfight between two BCL factions at RU on July 16.
Demanding judicial investigation into Sohel's murder, the forum acting president Prof Shamsul Alam Sarkar said the “unelected” VC must be immediately removed as four students had been killed since the VC came to office.
They alleged that the ruling party backed BCL, under the university administration's supervision, was engaged in illicit activities, like extortion in the pretext of collecting money for the Padma bridge's construction and this had led to Sohel's murder.
They urged the authorities concerned to ensure exemplary punishment against Sohel's killers and threatened to launch tougher agitation programmes if their demands were not met immediately.
The forum General Secretary Fazlul Haque said they would decide their next course of action at a meeting tomorrow.
