Students not studying science for job scarcity

Students are losing interest in science related subjects as science graduates are facing difficulties in job market, speakers said at a roundtable discussion in Chittagong yesterday. Aiming to lead a financially comfortable life, students are shifting away from science subjects towards business courses, they said. They were speaking at the roundtable discussion on “Science Education: Cause of disinterest in Students” organised by The Daily Star held at a city hotel. Because of consumerist society Bangladesh is becoming a weak capitalist country, said Prof Dr Moinul Islam of Economics Department of Chittagong University. The Daily Star Chittagong Bureau Chief Raisul Huq Bahar moderated the programme while Dr Iftekher Uddin Chowdhury, Dean of Faculty of Premier University, Tohureen Sabur, principal of Chittagong Women College, lecturers-- Dr Masud Rana of Chittagong Medical College (CMCH), Emran Harun and Soumitra Palit of Independent University, Dr Sajal Chandra Bonik and Sajal Choudhury of CUET and Jayosri Das of BGC Trust University, Zakir Hossain of Saint Placids' School and students Muttakin Chowdhury and Arafatul Islam participated.
