15 hurt as Jamaat-Shibir men clash with cops
At least 15 people including two policemen were injured as leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with law enforcers in the capital's Motijheel yesterday.
Eight Shibir activists were arrested from the spot for attacking police and obstructing them from discharging their duties, said Hayat-Uz-Zaman, officer-in-charge of Motijheel Police Station.
The detained are Redwan Islam, 25, Ishaq Bin Rashid, 18, Masud Rana, 20, Abdullah Al Mamun, 22, Md Zakaria, 21, Al Amin Hossain, 20, Nazmul Huda Rabbi, 18, and Imam Hossain, 20.
Several hundred Jamaat and Shibir men brought out a procession in front of Notre Dame College demanding immediate release of their arrested leaders including the war crimes suspects, said the OC.
When police obstructed the procession, the demonstrators hurled brick chips at the law enforcers prompting them to charge baton that triggered the clash, Hayat-Uz-Zaman said.
Witnesses said at least 15 people were injured and vehicular movement remained suspended for about 30 minutes following the clash.
Police filed a case against several hundred Jammat and Shibir men including the eight detained for attacking law enforcers, damaging public properties, halting traffic and obstructing police from carrying out their duties, the OC said.
