Women labourers besiege LGED office for arrears

Around 1400 women labourers under Rural Employment Road Maintenance Project (RERMP) of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) on Sunday besieged Lalmonirhat LGED office, demanding payment of their arrears They also threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme if their six moths' wage arrears from February are not paid before Eid. They have been working under the project for the last four years in 45 unions of five upazilas of the district and each of them gets Tk 90 per day as wage. “I have borrowed money from my neighbour to maintain my family on promise that I will repay the amount before Eid”, said Monowara Begum, 48, a woman labourer from Bhelabari union in Aditmari upazila. “What will I do if I fail to keep my promise?”, she posed. Contacted, Executive Engineer of Lalmonirhat LGED Rezaul Bari said he has sent a letter to the ministry concerned, seeking fund for payment of wage arrears to the women labourers. “We may get the allocation before Eid,” he said.
