Agitation on as culprit teacher flees area

People of Tannipara village under Chirirbandar upazila yesterday continued agitation, demanding arrest of a teacher whose indecent proposal had led a schoolgirl to commit suicide on Saturday. The guardians also joined the demonstration of the students of Uttar Palashbari Amiran Siraj Memorial High School in the upazila yesterday for punishment to the culprit. The teacher, Md Abu Bakkar Siddique, 53, of the school had gone into hiding soon after the girl took her life. The angry students and villagers locked the school on Sunday protesting the incident, police said. Police quoted family members as saying that Abu Bakkar Siddique, assistant headmaster of Uttar Palashbari Amiran Siraj Memorial High School, had made advances to Diti Rani, 12, a class eight student of the school, several times, but she refused. As the teacher made advances to Diti again on august 5, she brought the matter to the notice of her parents. Her father Abinash Chandra of Tannipara village filed a written complaint with Sahin Parvez, headmaster of the school, on August 6 The school managing committee held a meeting over the issue the following day and issued a letter to Abu Bakkar Siddique, asking him to explain by August 14. Tormented by the illicit proposal and delay in taking action against the teacher, Diti committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her room at around 11:00am on Saturday, family said. Diti's father filed a case with Chirirbandar Police Station against Assistant Headmaster Abu Bakkar Siddique and Headmaster Shahin Parvez the same day. The headmaster had also gone into hiding after filing of the case. Immediately after the incident, the villagers and students of the school took out a procession in the area demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of Abu Bakkar Siddique. Deputy Commissioner Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed and Police Superintendent Md Moinul Islam visited the area yesterday and talked to Diti's family members. Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chirirbandar Police Station, they have already launched a drive to arrest the accused in the case.
