Large number of pirated CDs, DVDs seized

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel yesterday seized huge quantities of pirated CDs, DVDs and other electronic goods from the capital's Kathalbagan and arrested a man on charge of piracy and marketing pirated goods. Golam Mohammad Sharif, 36, of Shahidbagh was arrested from a flat where the pirated items were found. Acting on a tip off, a team of Rab-2 seized 70,000 pieces of pirated CDs and DVDs, 11 machines used for copying CDs and DVDs, 98 machines used for writing CDs and DVDs, 14 mobile phones, 24 power supply units, six UPSs and 1 lakh CD and DVD covers, said Captain Abhishek Ahmed, deputy director of Legal and Media Wing of Rab. According to Rab officials, such type of criminals not only pirate CDs and DVDs, but also blackmail directors, producers, singers and actors. “The criminals make phone calls to them and demand a large sum of money. The criminals issue threats saying if their demands were not met, they would market the pirated CDs or DVDs of all newly released films, dramas or albums,” said a Rab official.
