Staff of a garment factory yesterday blockaded a road in Chittagong for one and a half hours demanding payment of arrears. Police detained three persons linked to the owner of the factory for questioning as the owner, Rafiqul Islam, was missing at the time this report was filed. They detained the owner's wife, older brother, and Md Hadi, who rented the factory to Rafiqul. Witnesses said at least 150 employees and workers of JR Fashion Limited blocked the Jamalkhan-Chalkbazar road in the city from 10:00am alleging that the factory's authorities have not been paying their salaries for the last four months. On information, Kotwali police and members of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Chittagong, rushed to the spot and assured the agitators of solving the matter. Getting assurance the workers freed the road but threatened to go for tougher movement if their due salaries were not paid by 2:00pm yesterday. However, as the matter was not resolved within 2:00pm, the workers decided to hold a sit-in on the factory premises until they are paid their arrears. About 40 policemen have been deployed in the area and they would continue to be there until the problem is solved, said Abdullah Al Mahmud, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police. The workers remained on the factory premises till the filing of this report at 9:05pm.
