Pregnant housewife dies after husband's assault
A seven-month pregnant housewife succumbed to her injuries in the capital yesterday, hours after her husband allegedly assaulted her failing to realise money from her family for gambling.
The deceased, Ruma Akhter, 22, got married to Akbor Kosai of Comilla six years back.
Akbor beat up Ruma at their residence in Merul Badda early hours yesterday because her family members could not pay him when he demanded money for gambling, said the victim's brother Md Masud.
Akbor beat her up again in the morning after which Ruma fell seriously ill, he said.
Being informed by Ruma's neighbours, Masud rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries around 11:30am.
The victim's mother Masuda Begum said Akbor started gambling a year and a half ago and beat up Ruma whenever he lost money to gambling,
Masud said his mother often had to rush to Ruma's house to save her from Akbor's torture. Akbor in exchange would demand money from Ruma's mother that he lost to gambling.
The victim's body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed with Badda Police Station in this regard. Police said Akbor went into hiding following the incident.
