Seven alleged carjackers and motorcycle thieves were arrested and two automobiles and six motorcycles were seized from their possession by Detective Branch (DB) of police in separate drives in the capital from Sunday to Tuesday. The arrestees were Mohammad Selim alias Salam, 24, Jamal Uddin, 24, Al Bahar, 35, Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman Prince, 25, Mohammad Toufiqul Islam Ronti, 26, Faysal Hossain Tonmoy, 26, and Asibur Rahman, 20. Conducting a drive at Rupnagar in Mirpur on Sunday, detectives nabbed Salam, Jamal, and Bahar with a private car and a microbus bearing fake license plates, DB Assistant Commissioner Muntasir Rahman told The Daily Star yesterday. Using information from the trio, DB personnel arrested the rest from Tejgaon on Tuesday and seized six stolen motorcycles from their possession, he said. Primary interrogation of the arrestees found that Toufiqul and Faysal led a group of about 30 carjackers, he said. The duo was engaged in robbing motorcycles for a long time and, making fake papers for the stolen bikes, used to sell those to people at market price, he added. DB sources said over 30 groups of carjackers, involving around 200 criminals, operate in the capital.
