Aug 4 Dinajpur Violence

Judicial probe demanded

Staff Correspondent
An anti-communalism platform yesterday demanded a judicial investigation of the August 4 violence in Dinajpur and punishment to the people responsible for it. During the violence, attackers burned and looted 50 houses of the Hindus in Balai Bazar area and adjacent Rajapur village of Chirirbandar upazila. More than 50 people were injured in the incident. The violence erupted over an attempt to construct a mosque near a temple in the area. At a press conference in the capital, the organisation accused local Jamaat-e-Islami men of provoking the violence to obstruct war crimes trial. Ajoy Roy, coordinator of Samprodayikata-Jangibad Birodhi Mancha, said the violence took place due to Jamaat's direct or indirect incitement. The platform's two other demands were rehabilitation and compensation for the victims and legal action against the government officials allegedly involved in the incident. Law enforcers arrested 17 people in connection with the violence on August 7.
